darksiren@slicehost: Day 6, Part 2

I fixed it. It wasn't as bad as I thought. In fact it was pretty easy. Just a little bit of googling and I created my own iptables user chain and it seems to work ok. (I keep wondering if people who are better at sysadmin than me look at my posts and go "lol lightweight" or something. :P)

At least I have LAMP installed now - only part not tested is mysql, i.e. seeing if apps using mysql work on my webserver. I'm going to install phpMyAdmin for that, and maybe start my second week actually dropping Drupal in so I can start fine tuning mysql, php, etc.

Will at least get phpMyAdmin in after I eat. :3 (May update this post)

Jon and I are rewatching Utena while eating din din now. I'm hoping I don't lose my inspiration with the Utena game I want to do with OVA rules - I've just been soooo busy with so many things, so haven't been able to start it just yet.

Also: am hoping to run something with Jon and Selina. :O But, more about that later.

darksiren@slicehost: Day 3

Locking myself out with denyhosts is fun! Woo, I didn't realize how strict those rules were. *wince* It actually put my host on the denied list because I had to test once to make sure I couldn't log in as root. I only have denyhosts set up to protect sshd, though, so right now it's of... dubious use. Later I will fine tune.

Also I have to remind myself the denyhosts config file is in /etc, at least on Fedora. Bwaaah, I think of writing all this down, then realize that every Unix system I use will have it in a different place ANYWAY, so I might as well just memorize and retain. :P

As for the LAMP installing, I've done the Apache web server portion and need to edit iptables to let in port 80 (slowing down a bit here cause I am looking up iptables syntax - I want to understand what I'm typing, not just type it in cause a tutorial says so.) The rest really shouldn't take more than a few minutes to do (process is similar to Apache) and PHP pretty much is a oneliner other than editing some configs...

But, I'm stuck writing RPoL posts. n.n So, I will probably continue tomorrow.

darksiren@slicehost: Day 1

So I'm messing with my new Slicehost account with SPARTAAAAA... I mean Fedora 11. (After realizing it's getting... more and more unlikely I'll return to DR, it's easier for me to give up another $20/month.)

First thing I did was tighten up security some. I've not done everything I could, but it's definitely good enough for now. Messed with sshd, sudoers, iptables... etc. and so forth.

Next time: Install the AMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) part of LAMP! I don't feel like complicating things by trying other web server / database combos just yet. :( Right now my focus is on getting a mirror of this drupal site installed on Slicehost, and see whether I can reduce the load times with various tweaks and accelerators. And if I can't THEN I will try more lightweight stuff to see if it'll make for a permanent solution.

Oh god and mail servers. Wait, can I even test that without a domain? I might have to buy another one. anthegenia.com, perhaps... :o

darksiren's domaine has been the personal domain and weblog of the Dark Siren Sally (Scylla Opal) since 2001.

I don't know what else to put in this box yet. So Ryshy says hi! :)
