The past couple weeks were pretty action-packed. Before that, I was incredibly busy with finals and projects, so that left no time at all for blog posting!

I graduated with my B.S. in Computer Science on May 26! The day before there was a convocation specifically for my department, then the "official" ceremony the next morning. After that, my mom and a good friend of mine put together a party for me. It was a lot of fun! Some folks came that I wasn't expecting. I told them I'd like to hang out more, and I really would, but I'm wondering just how busy my schedule is going to get! (I've figured out that I am just plain bad at resting, even when I really want to.)

That same weekend I went to FanimeCon 2012 with my hubby, which was a blast, even though we could only go for a couple half-days (Friday evening and Monday morning). We spent most of our time in the dealer room and artist's alley, with a few excursions into panels and the gaming room. I spent so much money! Wow!

My Graduation 2012

Location:  SJSU Spartan Stadium

I will be officially graduating with my B.S. in Computer Science at San Jose State.

It took 15 years on and off, and attending 4 different colleges, for me to finish this degree. I am proud of myself and amazed that it's finally over!

Will I do grad school? Probably not any time soon.

Hubby's visa approved!!

Well, the last couple weeks of the semester are eating up my life and time, but I did still want to announce the awesome news!

We've been hounded by immigration issues since we got married 7 years ago, for various reasons--mostly due to our inexperience dealing with the process, and following bad advice when I was trying to immigrate to Canada. Finally, after a year and a half apart and nearly that long going through the U.S. immigration process, my husband's visa was approved on the 24th of April!!

Once he gets the visa and arranges for moving stuff down here, he can finally come and join me in the U.S.!! YAY! This means no more having to worry about immigration ever again... unless for some reason we decide we want to move to another country.

Hubby plans to get U.S. citizenship, too, to make sure we can stay together for the rest of our lives. :)

So what's next?? I graduate with my B.S. in Computer Science at the end of this month. But it's gonna be a tough ride--I'm starting to burn out with how horribly busy I've been. I admit the past few days I've probably done more playing DCUO than studying or working on projects. But I don't intend to choke at the finish line... I want that degree. I only took 15 years to get this far, after all!

Busy times!

I've been having an incredibly busy last couple weeks. It's left me no time to write posts, to get back into RPoL. I feel terrible about the latter--I've had to abandon my Outcastes game AGAIN because my schedule is just insane, and I had to put aside my writing for my Returners Final Fantasy RPG in the making, Save the Queen. (StQ is also part of the Anthegenian Cycle. Someday I'll have time to write out the timeline to post here on on anthegenia.net.)

I've also been incredibly sleep deprived. I stayed up almost all of Wednesday and the entirety of Thursday, trying to finish an assignment in Prolog. It's an interesting language; the flow of unification, resolution and backtracking takes a different sort of thinking to grasp than most programming languages (the von Neumann languages they call 'em in CS parlance). I read that it, like Lisp (which I also got exposed to in this class), is often used for artificial intelligence applications. AI is one of those fields in computer science that I wish I had the time to touch while in college. I feel like it took my entire childhood and young adult life to reach a point where I have a genuine, burning desire to become a better programmer, and become intrigued by the more theoretical, mathematical side of the process.

Well, I'm starting my first day back from spring break right, by being completely sleep deprived! :D

Admittedly, it's for a good reason. I'm doing more work on this jquery/php group project. Unlike this site, it's using Wordpress, so I'm having to relearn a few things about it (and already missing Drupal entities). The only reason Wordpress is even involved is to allow for the creation of magazine page templates. Which means, oh boy! More theming. I don't think it'll be too painful on Wordpress, though. I'll just find a good, solid base theme and mess with templates to create the different page types the client is asking for.

The harder part is figuring out how in the world you unit test something like that. I think I am failing at incorporating proper unit testing for web projects, since I've really never been in the habit of it on my own. (Guess who didn't unit test for THIS site?) I suppose it's because my group project is this big Frankenstein of different languages and technologies, so gluing them together is challenging. Like most everything I'm doing lately, though, it's a work of progress and we're learning as we go.

I definitely plan to try to do the new Anthegenia site properly, though. Coded from scratch with a framework, unit testing set up from the start... I'll even have my hubby be my client so we can work out some user stories, all in the name of test-driven development. I'm determined to learn all the best practices I've neglected in my years of sabbatical in Canada!

SJSU Spring Break

Date:  Saturday, March 24, 2012 (All day) to Sunday, April 1, 2012 (All day)
Location:  Home!
Tags:  college vacation

This is my last spring break for... who knows how long? I don't know if I'm going to go to grad school any time soon.

Anyway it's given me a lot of time to listen to my CDs and finish this website so far. Not quite relaxing, but I am learning a lot! I do still have plenty to work on though: midterm on the following Monday, taxes to finish, and progress on the jquery / php project.

Yikes!! I am not getting any sleep today.

I'm trying to finish up this drupal layout, though what I really should be doing is finishing this unit test I need to present for class this afternoon. It's for a jquery project, a web app for a magazine which will (hopefully, eventually) be portable to all major tablets. I wrote my first jquery plugin ever for this! I was rather excited, though it took a few nights of struggling over custom animation functions!

But I've had the first inspiration in a while to get my websites started, and I ran with it. :) I will have time to regret it later today!
