Fandom

WCNews -- this site really brings back the nostalgia for me. Wow. :O

I almost wish I'd stayed in the fandom. As fandoms go, WC doesn't look like a terrible one. Kinda niche, and decent(ly obsessed) people from what I can see. That site's collected a great deal of Wing Commander info I didn't even know EXISTED, and is still getting more!

Sadly, I really only played the first two games before I went onto other pastures. I have some fond memories of the WCHQ, writing interactive fics and such. It was damn cool being one of the only girls I knew into the games, besides my sister, of course. I remember at one point I actually wrote a fic to be posted on a Wing Commander fanzine, based on the first contact Terrans had with the Kilrathi! *boggles* Ahh yes, and it was called Trid-Link (the fanzine), after that lil' booklet you got in the Wing Commander 1 box.

Geez... :D I almost want to replay WC now. Maybe I'll get Jon to do it if I can't. x.@ I suck badly at those kinds of games nowadays!

So I got accepted to theworldrp. I'm starting to play Juri already (here's her LJ, btw: la dame vaillante, which means "the valiant lady") which has been fun. :O

Apparently Kalli says I am a big hit. ?! Not sure how that happened. I ended up getting onto an AIM chat with a bunch of the girls RPing in "the world" and they all seem really nice and fun. I am seriously UNUSED to being accepted in fandom. I mean... this is the first time I've done ANYTHING related to fandom since the Breath of Fire days. Crazy. But they're great ladies. I felt welcome... I really, really appreciate that.

As for the RP... I kinda feel like I'm cheating, really. My characterization of Juri is not all that far off from Archana. In fact, I ultimately chose her for just that reason. The difference of course is that Archa is a soldier/priestess, and Juri more of a socialite/aristocrat.

I was going to spend tonight working on Rosalia's sheet, but once again, I was thwarted. :/ Deadlines and weariness aside, friends > RP and I really wanted to be there to talk.

I've seen with my own eyes, and lived with my own experience, how much damage depression can do to a person's life -- and sometimes, the lives of others, too. I understand all too well the self-destructive urge, but I have the wisdom of many years of self-analysis and a husband who just never quit when it comes to making me face the *truth* of my condition. I honestly consider myself lucky that I've had these years to think about myself and what's really wrong with me. Many people with my condition never get that far -- they only continue to blame themselves, and believe that everything that goes wrong in their life is their just desserts.

I think that fandom has changed a lot since I really got into Breath of Fire fandom back in 1997 (and subsequently burned out so bad I never went back, heh). And I'm not sure all those changes have been for the best.

I miss the days...

...of old fanpages and character shrines, where pages were often fugly, but had more personality. People wrote what they wanted to about their favorite series, even if it was stuff other sites already had -- and if it was unique? it was a gem to find.

...when 'shipping' (as in relationships between chars, not always canon) wasn't the primary thing that kept fandoms going. It's as if people have to have a favorite 'ship or OTP or whatever to be interested at all any more.

My sleep pattern is all screwed up again. o.O

Mostly because Jon and I have been watching Revolutionary Girl Utena late at night. ^^;; We just finished it tonight. Uh. Today. This morning. Or something.
