Anthegenian Cycle: An Introduction

The Anthegenian Cycle is a series of Chronicles following the history of Eskarne, the second planet of Atelei Moira, and its denizens--the Ytherians, children of the stars, and the Zundeeni, children of the earth, whose bloodlines have diluted and mixed as ages have come to pass.

As an exercise for myself, I will be writing a post per Chronicle just to refresh my thoughts about each, and keep record of these ideas on my much-neglected journal. (Which, speaking of, I am considering a redesign for already. A shame I have so little time!)

First, some background on Anthegenian Cycle terminology:

- Celestians are akin to heavenly bodies in the vastness of space: our stars and suns. But in the cosmology of the Vast, the Celestians are not only bodies of superheated gases with lifespans stretching for millions, if not billions of years. They are also sentient beings with miraculous powers of creation, destruction and omniscience within their personal domain--their solar system, bounded only by the farthest reaches of their gravitational pull. Separated from their neighbors by light-years of distance, the Celestians pass their time by creating worlds out of unshaped matter, fashioning denizens to dwell on those worlds, influencing the ecosystems and societies they build, and nurturing or terrorizing them in accordance to their whims and personalities.

Silver Grove: Fragment 3

Note: The fragments I'm poking at lately cover Iria and Albion's early days as ward and guardian, and later, subordinate and superior in the Sophist Inquisition. They will probably never appear in the Silver Grove main story (partly because I feel their emotional nature comes off as too overbearing), but comprise a part of the backstory that at the moment, inspires me.

From the apex of the bell tower, Iria stepped out onto the ledge, her toes an inch from the edge as she gazed up at the storm-tossed clouds. Below her, the twenty floor drop yawned periliously; the lights of the street far below blurred against the droplets on her spectacles. The wind whipped at her clothing, strong enough to steal her breath away, to stagger her precarious balance.

Slowly Iria spread her arms wide, poised to embrace the sky above her. She tilted her head up, as a lover gazing upon her beloved, her lips slightly parted to taste the rain. The wind pushed back roughly, flattening her against the wall, tearing at the pins binding her braid against the back of her head. The coiled strands unraveled, whipping like livewires in the tempest, pale as silvered lightning against the granite stone of the tower.

"I am not allowed to leave the cage, sir," said the girl calmly as Albion reached out to touch the door handle. She rose to her feet, watching him intently, curiously, without fear or confusion at his presence. "Besides, you've not deactivated the containment field. It would be dangerous to touch it, and would surely disrupt that shield you hold."

The Chief Evaluator raised an eyebrow, but withdrew his hand. He did not drop his focus, preferring its consistent, comforting hum in the back of his mind, anchoring his identity. Still, her relentless gaze both unnerved and intrigued him; she was obviously quite perceptive and intelligent, despite her complacence in confinement. Yet the intensity of her prayer were proof enough that she shunned the philosophy of her creators--if, indeed, she understood its meaning.

"Mother had the key. Why is she not here with you? You are not like the other specialists that come to see me." Frowning, the blonde stared brazenly at his uniform white, the garb of an Inquisitor on overt duty, and settled on the insignia of his badge. She clearly recognized the Caduceus, as her expression changed to one of surprise, then unabashed awe. "You... wear the symbol of the Sophists." Solemnly she raised her palms to him, and implored him with wide-eyed innocence. "Hand of the Goddess, are you my savior?"

It will all have to be eliminated, Albion thought, replacing his gloves on his hands with grim resolution. Their sin is too grave for the privilege of survival.

A whisper and a rustle of chains diverted his attention to a corner of the room. Another wretched creature? Rage and apprehension spiked in the High Inquisitor's chest as he swept his light globe toward the source of the sound.

My gods.

A birdcage as tall as the ceiling rested in the corner, partially obscured by drapes of dark cloth. Kneeling in its center was a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen, her shackled hands clenched in fervent prayer. Waif-like, with stringy, unkempt blonde hair, she bowed her head with her eyes tightly shut and whispered the words to a hymn of deliverance he recognized instantly from the Book of Sophia.

In this heathen place? Albion stepped closer, and when he did, the girl stopped praying and lifted her eyes, meeting his gaze unflinchingly. She was human. Her eyes were the azure of a clear winter sky. Her wrists and ankles were rough and scarred, signs of a prolonged and ceaseless captivity. She was the culmination of decades of work, the one shining success of the Mornes' butchery of a career.

Divine Sophia, forgive me for what I must do.

Silver Grove: a brief introduction

The story of Silver Grove falls somewhere in the middle of the Anthegenian Cycle, set in an era similar in technology level to the mid 1980s. The main story focuses on six teenagers, all of whom possess varying degrees of supernatural power through their divine souls (Ytherian - star-born, or Zundeeni - earth-born). Unfortunately, they come of age in an era where supernaturals are seen as unpredictable heretics to be feared, shunned and--in extreme cases--killed. The predominant religion of the era, Sophistry, is a bastardization of early worship of Sophia Anthegenia, the Ytherian Creator-Soul of Eskarne, and ironically condemns Ytherians as dangerous and deviant. The Sophist Church at this time rules in all but name, advising an imperial family that has been ineffectual for decades.

The six teens are sent by their parents to attend Silver Grove, a prestigious boarding school--in some cases, simply to put their children as far away from them as possible. Though they do not know it immediately, Silver Grove is currently under evaluation by the Sophist Church's intelligence branch. Chief Evaluator Re Albion demanded to serve as Headmaster for the term, given he outranks all other faculty by a fair amount. In fact, several members of the faculty also have ties to this 'Inquisition', including Re Albion's personal assistant, Iria Winterlance. What is little known is that their assignment is specifically to watch over the young protagonists of the story, to ensure that they do not pose a threat to the country. If they do, the teens must be eliminated.
