Emberdays wiki stuff, blah blah.

By Dark Siren Sally - Posted on 24 February 2008 in Characters, Programming, Website

I'm not doing much lately, just gradually building up the subcategories for characters in Emberdays and writing an odd NPC profile here and there. The site is still not organized to my liking, and there's still a lot to add, so there are bits and pieces that will change places and maybe even be reworded.

For ease of writing the profiles, I'll have to make some wiki pages for each of the PCs, too... more like placeholders, though. But it's easier than me referring to one of the PCs in the wiki and having to remember the URL of their character sheet to post as a reference. [Edit/Note: ED wiki is gonna remain locked for me to edit, I think. So it's more something for others to read, not add to.]

I think it will be a long time before I am truly DONE with the site, as there must be hundreds of NPCs by now. o.O Well, maybe a hundred. Maybe more. I dunno, but there's a lot. And this doesn't even take into account how many more new NPCs I will create as the game continues to progress. ^^;

For now I'm just starting with the more important and currently relevant NPCs, and working from there. Like, I started with the Jackal's Fangs, and Jackal himself. I also typed up Elyssa, and put a placeholder page for Lotus. Then I can start working on pages for characters linked to in the existing profiles.

Or I could start from a new category of NPC. I want to make Alon's profile, for example, which will then open up making profiles for her husband Barin, her daughters Sunari and Sanahra, her political rival(s), etc. From Sunari I could write about Daruban and Ju-Zhon... and so on.

Conversely I could start with Milena (whom as I said will have a 'placeholder' page on the wiki, linking to her charsheet), and go down the whole list of her connections, making profiles for each of them. Quite a lengthy feat considering how well connected Milena is, but a lot of those profiles would be stubs anyway, since I've not introduced all of them.

Hehe, I'm putting a lot of thought into this, but it makes me happy. I actually like creating the category hierarchy (WikkaWiki has a system similar to MediaWiki, I think, it's pretty easy to implement) and filling out all the information for the NPCs. It helps jog my memory, and honestly, I really liked making every one of those characters, for different reasons! It pleases me to create an online reference that I can refer to easily, and that the players could use if they want. (Not that I expect anyone to. I just like installing websites!)

I do hope I'm not discouraging Kraken from making his tiddlywiki for Emberdays though. ^^; I mean, I don't think his would be the same at all. Mine is intended for a more general use, so I try to be vague about what information I put publically about the NPCs and plot, if I think it may spoil the game for one or more players.

Oh yes, just to remind myself, I did have to hack WikkaWiki a bit to make it work the way I wanted it to with categories. Basically, I rearranged a few lines and added an if statement to exclude the HomePage from category lists. This allows me to put CategoryLinks in HomePage safely, which makes me happy because I wanted to link to all the IC info from the front.
