Getting back to my roots...

My internet roots, that is. :)

I've been neglecting my website for quite a while, and for a lot of reasons. Things have gone up and down, sideways and tumbling end on end, and back up again. I've been meaning to give the good ol' blog an overhaul for a while now (it's already outdated for my needs, not to mention needs an upgrade--maybe even Drupal 8?!) but just haven't had the chance.

So let's start with a list of things I've been doing, 'cause lists are easy!

1) Lost my previous job - At the end of last year, my former employer kinda sorta let me go. I've never been given the official reason, but from what I could piece together it was a mix of "We can't afford you any more" and a big dose of politics. It was a good run, but I was also iffy about whether I wanted to commit there long term, so life, fate, or circumstance (whichever you prefer to believe in) decided for me.

Where have I been?

After I graduated and started my regular 8-5 job, I was certain I'd have a great deal of free time in the evenings for personal projects and, of course, my much-neglected blog.

Turns out I was quite wrong! There are a few reasons for this, which I can boil down to:

1. Freelance web development contracts. My first one was with a printing company a friend of mine works for. It was for a Drupal site so I thought "no sweat!" Which was mostly the case, until I realized how much customizing I'd need to do to get the Ubercart shopping cart module to match the company's needs and requests. I didn't cut any corners with this though, which meant I had more than a few sleepless nights on discounted hours (it's a friend, I was being generous!)

2. Having a life. A novel thing for me, given how I used to live (hardly any friends in Canada) and how much I was engrossed in school or immigration paperwork until last May. Now that my husband is here, though, I can't help but take advantage of the fact I no longer have to divide my time between him and everyone else. I can bring him places, meet people with him, and explore the Bay Area in ways I would have never thought of doing if I didn't have someone new to the area with me. :)

3. New hobbies! Namely beading (as in, making bead jewelry) and Guild Wars 2, the first game in forever to obsess me nearly as much as the Sims (and that's saying something).

My week: work, exercise, game and gadget shopping!

My first week with two part time contract jobs was pretty tiring. I have a lengthy commute now because it takes me 30-45 minutes to get to my first job, then 30 or so to get to the second, and an hour or more to get back home. I'm also not earning nearly as much with the second job but as I may have mentioned, I'm doing it for a friend. :) Well, and for the potential references and experience to put on my resume, of course.

I'm kinda getting into the whole idea of trying a lot of different things while I still have the freedom to do so. I've got this second contract and I'm also reviving a volunteer project (also web related, for a non-profit). I'm poking at my web projects when I have the time (I don't much, lately). I'm meeting new people and getting into new hobbies. It's a lot of fun, but a lot of figuring out how to balance my time better, too.

One important habit that I have to keep up with is exercise. I'm trying to go with my hubby and a friend to the gym every Saturday at 10am now, and thinking of ways to exercise during the week, too. I get tired pretty quick with all the work and commute. Though I had it pretty tough in my last semester of school, too. The hard part is that I work so early that my only time to exercise is when I'm the most tired.

So I'm thinking now of buying some weights and having them at my cubicle. At least I could get some reps in while thinking about code! There's a lot of time I'm either sitting and waiting for things to compile or stuck on figuring out something difficult, so I'm not actually typing anyhow.

Back to school...

Well, I'm starting my first day back from spring break right, by being completely sleep deprived! :D

Admittedly, it's for a good reason. I'm doing more work on this jquery/php group project. Unlike this site, it's using Wordpress, so I'm having to relearn a few things about it (and already missing Drupal entities). The only reason Wordpress is even involved is to allow for the creation of magazine page templates. Which means, oh boy! More theming. I don't think it'll be too painful on Wordpress, though. I'll just find a good, solid base theme and mess with templates to create the different page types the client is asking for.

The harder part is figuring out how in the world you unit test something like that. I think I am failing at incorporating proper unit testing for web projects, since I've really never been in the habit of it on my own. (Guess who didn't unit test for THIS site?) I suppose it's because my group project is this big Frankenstein of different languages and technologies, so gluing them together is challenging. Like most everything I'm doing lately, though, it's a work of progress and we're learning as we go.

I definitely plan to try to do the new Anthegenia site properly, though. Coded from scratch with a framework, unit testing set up from the start... I'll even have my hubby be my client so we can work out some user stories, all in the name of test-driven development. I'm determined to learn all the best practices I've neglected in my years of sabbatical in Canada!

Yikes!! I am not getting any sleep today.

I'm trying to finish up this drupal layout, though what I really should be doing is finishing this unit test I need to present for class this afternoon. It's for a jquery project, a web app for a magazine which will (hopefully, eventually) be portable to all major tablets. I wrote my first jquery plugin ever for this! I was rather excited, though it took a few nights of struggling over custom animation functions!

But I've had the first inspiration in a while to get my websites started, and I ran with it. :) I will have time to regret it later today!

A quick and dirty intro...

I decided I might as well just start a site instead of agonizing over theming it... I'm too busy for agonizing on side projects right now, but I DO very much want my blog back. So here it is, getting built up gradually as I find the time to mess with it.

Running Drupal 7.12 right now. Drupal is tried and true for me and I still like it for many things, despite the code being rather outdated at this point.

I also have another webserver now! My shiny new linode at anthegenia.net. It's really just a plain page with some code I stored on it. I decided to be different and install nginx on it instead of apache. nginx is so much easier to install now, I've found! Or maybe I was just less adventurous when I first tried it.

I'm gearing up for a spring break of fun, relaxation and hubby time, so I may get some little bitty things done, but I could also be gaming, writing or coding instead!

Now to resume my tinkering. :)
